There spacer keeps the shifter in-board, giving even more room for your foot on the floorboard. Without it, the shift peg stays in the same position, relative to the floorboard as stock. Either way will work, it's just a preference of whether you want the shift peg in the same position, relative to the floorboard, or if you want the shift peg a little more in-board of the floorboard.
